UVM blazes to first on opening day of carnival
Stowe, VT: The University of Vermont fired a defining opening salvo today in the alpine portion of their home carnival, opening up a lead of 71 points over runner up Dartmouth.
The day could not have been any more clear or the snow in better shape. A light dusting overnight added a little fluff to the surface but underneath was hard packed snow, which stood up well to the pounding from all of the athletes. Despite the sun, temperatures were quite brisk and as the day wore on the wind made its voice heard, sometimes causing large clouds, which resulted in some choice words from photographers. However the sun brought out the crowds and the spectating area was packed with fans of all schools, chatting, cheering, and generally having a most pleasurable time.
Speaking of pleasurable, the team who seemed to be having the most fun in the sun today was the University of Vermont. Sweeping the top three spots for the women and the top two for the men, the Catamounts were certainly making their roar heard in all corners. First in the Catamount trifecta for the women was Megan Ryley (2:06.04) followed by Lyndee Janowiak (2:06.04) and then concluded by Kara Crow (2:06.46). For the men David Donaldson once again reigned supreme with a winning time of (1:59.99) with teammate Erik Gilbert (2:00.85) bringing up second while Dartmouth's Trevor Leafe (2:00.88) took third.
The University of Vermont carnival is unique, as the Nordic events don't start until Saturday so we can't report on that yet. However, it can certainly be predicted the Dartmouth's Nordic squad, the resounding deal sealer behind the Big Green's victories thus far, will certainly not rest easy with the University of Vermont in the lead.
Team scores sees the University of Vermont in the lead with 275 points followed by Dartmouth with 209 points and rounded out with the University of New Hampshire taking third with 201 points.
Join us tomorrow as the action continues with the Slalom at Stowe and the Classic events at Trapp Family Lodge and see what happens with both the Alpine and Nordic races in the equation.
