UVM maintains lead but by a lesser margin
Stowe, VT: The University of Vermont maintained its lead today but by a much thinner margin than yesterday, only 27 points as opposed to the 71 of yesterday.
The sun was out but the day was, by any New England standard, wicked cold. Both the Nordic and Alpine events saw shivering athletes in the start boxes. The cold however also meant fast snow for both events with both courses holding up well under the dozens of athletes.
On the first day of Nordic competition, held at the Trapp Family Lodge, the Dartmouth Women once again hammered down on the 5k classic course with Ida Sargent (16m 27s) taking the lead. However the University of Vermont's Caitlin Patterson (16m38s) took second place for the home team while Dartmouth's Rosie Brennan (16m47s) took third. On the Men's side the University of Vermont's own Franz Bernstein (29m29s) took the winning honors followed by Dartmouth's Nils Koons (30m2s) and then Middlebury's Dylan Grald (30m03s).
On the steeps of the Alpine Slalom at Stowe the winning women again was the University of Vermont's Megan Ryley (1:42.16) followed for a second time as well by teammate Lyndee Janowiak (1:42.86). The trio however was not to happen twice with the University of New Hampshire's Veronique Archambault-Leger (1:43.00) taking third. On the men's side Dartmouth's Ace Tarberry (1:39.34) took top honors while Colby's Vincent Lebrun-Fortin (1:39.52) took second and the University of New Hampshire's Paul Atkinson (1:39.61) took third.
Looking over on the team side, the University of Vermont maintained its lead with 687 total points. Dartmouth however played significant catch up with 660 points in the bank. The University of New Hampshire once again assumed its third place spot with 585 points. Tomorrow will certainly be interesting as the University of Vermont Nordic squad will be doing their best to keep the lead over Dartmouth in the 10k freestyle. Regardless of the outcome, it's sure to be an interesting race.
